July 17, 2007 - Bronzewood Paedeia in concert - Springfield Presbyterian Church, Sykesville, MD. Bronze and wood come together in a concert featuring the sweet resonance of harp and handbells. Bronzewood Paedeia (pronunciation: pie-DEE-uh), the duo of harpist Kevin Holsinger and handbell solo artist Michèle Sharik, surprise and delight audiences with their beautiful music and charming story-telling. In a performance on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:30 PM at Springfield Presbyterian Church, 7300 Spout Hill Road in Sykesville, Bronzewood Paedeia will present an eclectic program of ancient and modern music, from Renaissance dances to modern jazz, and all things in between. This diversity of style gives the concert a universal appeal. Kevin Holsinger performs on a cross-strung harp. Unlike a lever or pedal harp, the cross-strung harp has two sets of strings - one set for "natural" notes and one for "accidentals". This makes it a fully chromatic instrument and gives the performer instant access to all notes, just like a piano or marimba. As one of many new cross-strung harp players in America that are on the cutting edge of this radical departure from the Celtic harp, Kevin is motivated by the new horizons that can be reached on a fully chromatic instrument. The music of the cross-strung harp is both haunting and enthralling, yet intimate and evocative. Michèle Sharik (pronunciation: share-ick) is raising bronze bells to the level of high art. Renowned for her graceful and flowing style, she is an emerging artist in the growing genre of English handbell performance; an art that began as a popular pub activity some 400 years ago and from this humble beginning has developed into a concert performance instrument. During the concert, Michèle will lift more than 250 lbs. (113.5 kg) of bronze in her own dance-like choreography combining both grace and strength. A visual as well as musical performer, a handbell soloist must combine the fluid grace of a dancer, the musicality of a virtuoso, and the precision of an athlete to perform on this demanding instrument. The combination of harp and handbells is a magical and enchanting sound that will surely captivate the entire audience. Date/Time: Tuesday, July 17 at 7:30 PM Place: Springfield Presbyterian Church, 7300 Spout Hill Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 Tickets: Admission is FREE. An offering will be taken. Suggested donation $10 per person.
